CORRESPONDENCE OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION: LETTERS TO GEORGE WASHINGTON

(WASHINGTON, George) SPARKS, Jared, editor. Correspondence of the American Revolution: Being Letters of Eminent Men to George Washington, from the Time of his Taking Command of the Army to the End of His Presidency. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1853. Four volumes. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter brown calf, raised bands, black and maroon morocco spine labels, marbled boards, endpapers, and edges. $2800.

First edition of this collection of Jared Sparks' edition of George Washington's correspondence relating to the Revolution, in contemporary calf.

The publication of Washington's writings was Sparks' great life work. In addition to using Washington's own papers and manuscripts, Sparks "searched public and private archives for material, questioned survivors of the Revolution, visited and mapped historic sites… Only by knowing the paucity and poverty of printed material on the American Revolution before 1830 can one realize the debt that American history owes to Sparks" (DAB). Sabin 16876. Howes S814. Owner signatures of James Buckner.

Scattered faint foxing to lightly toned interiors; a few corners gently bumped. An extremely good copy in contemporary calf.
