SIGNED BY WARHOL: THE DIANE VON FURSTENBERG ISSUE OF INTERVIEW MAGAZINE
WARHOL, Andy. Interview magazine signed. New York: Interview Enterprises, November 1981. Folio, staple-bound as issued, original pictorial paper wrappers. $800.
Original November 1981 issue of Warhol's Interview magazine with Diane Von Furstenberg on the cover, boldly signed on the front wrapper by Andy Warhol.
When Andy Warhol started Interview magazine in the early 1970s, he would walk the streets of Manhattan's Upper East Side giving away copies. Indeed, Interview under Warhol's stewardship, from its inception until his death in 1987, captured a certain moment in New York society. It also further blurred the distinction between art and popular culture. Warhol's magazine would feature artists and their work, but also improvised conversations with actors and models. Perhaps most importantly, the magazine would be a forum to publish the opinions and images of his famous friends, many of whom were famous for only the proverbial fifteen minutes. Three standard features make up each issue: the extemporaneous celebrity chat, flashy photography of starlets, and advertisements for local merchants and restaurateurs, and most importantly, for Warhol's own merchandise.
