"IN CASE THE ONCELERS ARE SNEAKING IN HIGH ABOVE CAYUGA'S WATERS": FIRST EDITION OF THE LORAX, DELIGHTFULLY INSCRIBED BY "THAT OLD DR. SEUSS"

SEUSS, Dr. The Lorax. New York: Random House, (1971). Quarto, original pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers.

First edition of Dr. Seuss' favorite among his own books, a rare copy warmly and whimsically inscribed by him, "for Pattie and Gray (in case the Oncelers are Sneaking in High above Cayuga's waters). Love from: Audrey and that Old Dr. Seuss."

In The Lorax, his "impassioned" parable about caring for nature in the face of "progress," Seuss "unleashed some of his most magical language, phrases that defied rational criticism and enraptured a generation… His palette shifted from his usual primary colors to mauve, plum, purple and sage-green… The book startled Dr. Seuss readers, and reviewers were divided. Some called it a morality tale. Ted shrugged, saying, 'It's impossible to tell a story without a moral—either the good guys win or the bad guys win'… The Lorax was ahead of its time and its popularity began to soar only a decade later when the environmental movement exploded. Ted himself began to talk of it as his favorite book" (Morgan, 211). In honor of Lady Bird Johnson's emphasis on beautification, Seuss donated his drawings for this book to the LBJ Library (Stofflet, 47-51). First issue, with 3-line copyright notice and yellow-boxed blurb on rear board. This book was not issued with a dust jacket. Younger & Hirsch 49. Magazine clipping laid in.

Text fine; boards with slight rubbing to extremities, mild embrowning to spine and boards. An extremely good copy, highly desirable inscribed by Seuss.
