"John Muir was for many years California's best known nature-writer" (Zamorano Eighty 56), and became the acknowledged leader of the forest conservation movement in the United States. The leaf reads in its entirety: "… bearings & make bee-lines through pathless wilds. The day seems to circle around it, & the azure dome [crossed out, replaced with `vault'] bends regularly down upon it like a bellglass, in concordance with its varied colors & curves, as if in every way belonging to it alone."
