MOTHER TERESA. Typed letter signed. Calcutta, February 26, 1996. Single sheet of paper with reproduced prayer card on verso, measuring 6-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches. $3500.
Prayer card from the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta featuring a typed letter encouraging the recipient to make use of his suffering: “M Teresa MC.”
The typed letter, dated "26th February, 1996," reads in full: "+LDM Dear Art Edmonds, Thank you very much for your letter. I invite each of your friend to offer their suffering in union with the suffering of Christ so to make it redemptive for themselves and for the world. Suffering in itself is nothing; but joined with Christ's suffering it becomes a beautiful gift to the world and to ourselves. For, Christ took up His Cross as a sign of His love for us. Make use of every bit of your pain. God bless you. [signed] M Teresa MC." Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Thirty years prior, the Albanian nun had left her teaching post at a Roman Catholic school in Calcutta to devote her life to working among the poorest in the slums. Mother Teresa was canonized as St. Teresa of Calcutta in 2016. With a printed Isaiah quotation on the verso and a printed drawing of two large hands holding a small baby.
