PHOTOGRAPHIC TRIBUTE TO MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, SIGNED BY OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER GEORGE KALINSKY AS WELL AS BOXING LEGEND JOE FRAZIER AND TENNIS STAR JOHN MCENROE
KALINSKY, George. Garden of Dreams: Madison Square Garden 125 Years. (New York: Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 2004). Quarto, original stiff glazed paper-covered boards, photographic endpapers, original dust jacket. $450.
First edition of this celebration of "The World's Most Famous Arena," generously illustrated with photographs by the Garden's official photographer, George Kalinsky, and signed by him, as well as by sports legends Joe Frazier and John McEnroe.
"While not every dream happened in the Garden," Kalinsky told the New York Times upon this book's publication, "there are enough of them to fill a book. The greater the athletes or entertainers are, the greater their desire to perform on the stage of Madison Square Garden." This volume, lavishly illustrated with color and black-and-white photographs, most taken by Kalinsky in his role as the Garden's official photographer, commemorates the arena's century-and-a-quarter of memorable moments. Signed not only Kalinsky but also two larger-than-life sports personalities: boxer Joe Frazier, who dealt Muhammad Ali his first professional loss in the "Fight of the Century" at the Garden on March 8, 1971; and John McEnroe, whose many tennis matches at the Garden include his 1979 Masters victory. (A fourth, unidentified signature also appears.).
A fine signed copy.
