This striking engraving is from 1867, after the Civil War but before Grant's election as president in 1868. Grant is portrayed still in his uniform with his wife and four children, with a portrait of Lincoln on the wall in the background. Artist and engraver William Sartain attended both Central High School and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia with painter Thomas Eakins, who remained a life-long friend. Sartain also produced large engraved portraits of both Lincoln and Washington with their families.

Minor soiling and wear to sheet margins only, a few short closed tears, small chip to one corner; image crisp and fine. Beautifully framed.
