Fisher's design, in all of his writings, was to ``disclose the important influences, social, moral, racial, political, and constitutional, which created the American Republic'' (Preface). In these volumes, he describes the social history of America's early years, with chapters such as ``Cavaliers and Tobacco,'' ``From Puritans and Witches to Literature and Philosophy,'' and ``Quaker Prosperity.''.
