CHAGALL, Marc. Septieme Biennale de Peinture 1968. Menton: Association Biennale de Menton, 1968. Octavo, original French wrappers. $800.

Original program for an art exhibit dedicated to Marc Chagall, inscribed on the title page, "Pour M J. Liverant. Marc Chagall."

The program for the Biennale in Menton, an exclusive town on the Riviere near Monaco and the border with Italy and close to Chagall's home in Saint Paul de Vence. With full color cover illustration of Chagall's "l'Oiseau Bleu." The recipient of this copy was Joseph Liverant, a fellow Russian Jewish emigré and close friend of Chagall. Liverant and Chagall both fled Europe in World War II, Liverant to Canada and Chagall to the United States. After the war, both acquired residences in Provence, where shared social circles, similar ages, and a mutual love of Yiddish combined to forge a lasting bond of friendship between the two.
