CHAGALL, Marc. Marc Chagall. Peintures bibliques recentes 1966-76. (Paris): Editions des musees nationaux, (1977). Small square quarto, original stiff wrappers. $950.

First edition, inscribed on the title page, "Pour M. Liverant. Marc Chagall 1978."

The catalogue of an exhibition held in 1977 of Chagall works with a biblical theme, with numerous illustrations, six of them in full color. The Musée National Message Biblique Marc Chagall in Nice, now known as the Musée Marc Chagall, was founded in 1973 with a specific focus on Chagall's biblical paintings, a focus it maintains to this day. From the collection of Joseph Liverant, a fellow Russian Jewish emigré and close friend of Chagall. Liverant and Chagall both fled Europe in World War II, Liverant to Canada and Chagall to the United States. After the war, both acquired residences in Provence, where shared social circles, similar ages, and a mutual love of Yiddish combined to forge a lasting bond of friendship between the two.

A few ink smudges to rear cover. About-fine condition.
