Nelson wrote this pamphlet, "People With Strength In Monroe, North Carolina," to raise funds for Robert F. Williams Monroe North Carolina NAACP Chapter. The narrative traces the civil rights history of Monroe, North Carolina, including persistent attacks by the Ku Klux Klan and their racist supporters and the successful integration of the Monroe public swimming pool and public library in the face of armed opposition. The pamphlet also solicits contributions for The Committee to Aid the Monroe Defendants, a legal defense fund meant to assist victims of "racist terror" (including arrests motivated by race and/or resulting from conflict instigated by the Klan).
