"FOR ALMOST TWO THOUSAND YEARS OF EXILE, JEWS HAVE PRAYED DAILY FOR THE RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF PALESTINE…"
HARTOG, Anna E. Jewish Communal Settlements in Palestine. New York: Jabonim—Labor Zionist Youth, 1945. Octavo, staple-bound as issued, original self-wrappers; pp. 40. $250.
First edition of this pamphlet about the founding and operation of Israeli kibbutzim.
Published just a few months after the end of World War II, this pamphlet is focused on the kibbutzim, communal settlements in Palestine. Drawing on secondary sources, author Anna Hartog examines the kibbutzim and how they function socially, economically, and overall. Interestingly, she also notes serious errors in their establishment, including an over-reliance on monoculture and the excessive turnover of kibbutzniks. Hartog also provides a lengthy bibliography of the sources she used to write this pamphlet.
