"WITH RESPECTFUL GOOD WISHES FROM MARY FRANCES": FIRST EDITION OF AS THEY WERE, INSCRIBED BY M.F.K. FISHER TO PSYCHIATRIST PORTIA BELL HUME, A PIONEER IN COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH
FISHER, M.F.K. As They Were. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1982. Octavo, original half white cloth, original dust jacket.
First edition of this collections of nostalgic writings on food and travel, inscribed in the year of publication by M.F.K. Fisher (with "Marietta" and "Charlie" in an unknown hand): "For Portia Bell Home from MFK Fisher, Glen Ellen, 1982 and [Marietta] with respectful good wishes from Mary Frances and [Charlie]—."
"In this glittering collection of 19 personal pieces, written over five decades (some previously published), Fisher salutes with impeccable exactitude the potencies of places and people, food and other sensory diversions, inner and outer weather… Altogether: a treat for Fisher's loyal and considerable following" (Kirkus Reviews). This copy is inscribed to Portia Bell Hume, known for her work advocating community-based mental health care in Northern California. A well-known psychiatrist, Hume taught at the University of California and eventually opened two psychiatry clinics. The "Marietta" in the inscription was Marietta Voorhees, a St. Helena drama teacher with whom Fisher conducted a quiet, live-in relationship toward the end of her life. Charlie was Fisher's beloved pet cat.
Book fine, price-clipped dust jacket with only slightest soiling. A lovely inscribed copy.
