New Wizard of Oz

SECOND EDITION OF THE WIZARD OF OZ, 1903

BAUM, L. Frank. The New Wizard of Oz. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, (1903). Octavo, original pictorial dark green cloth.

Second edition, second state, of Baum’s cherished fantasy classic, with illustrations by W.W. Denslow.

First published in 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz quickly established itself as a fantasy classic: the New York Times “omnisciently offered, ‘It will indeed be strange if there be a normal child who will not enjoy the story” (Fricke, 22). The second edition appeared in order to capitalize on the success of the 1902 stage adaptation of Baum’s book. “Although they were produced from the original Geo. M. Hill printing plates, the early Bobbs-Merrill printings have several major changes, including a new title. For this edition, Denslow supplied new cover, title page and endpaper drawings” (Hanff & Greene, 28). Second issue, second state, with correct color sequence for in-text illustrations, three-entry copyright notice, and all other points; a later copy, with orange removed from crow’s eye on front cover, “THE” on spine reset in serifed type and period after Baum’s name on spine removed. Hearn, lv. Gift inscription.

Occasional short marginal closed tears, most repaired; minor paper restoration to gutter of pages [5]-[8]; closed tear across page [209] repaired with tape. Cloth fine with slightest rubbing to spine ends. A pleasing, extremely good copy.
