Clowes' history of the Royal Navy—originally planned as five volumes before expanding to seven—served for many years as the definitive work on the subject. Captain Alfred Mahan, H.W. Wilson, Sir Clements Markham and President Theodore Roosevelt all contributed to this important and still often-cited account.
