NAVAL HISTORY, ILLUSTRATED AND HANDSOMELY BOUND

CLOWES, William Laird. The Royal Navy. A History from the Earliest Times to the Present. London: Sampson Low, Marston and Company, 1897-1903. Seven volumes. Octavo, recent full blue morocco gilt, raised bands, spines with gilt-stamped ship motifs, top edges gilt, uncut. $3800.

First edition of Sir William Laird Clowes' important history of the Royal Navy "from the earliest times to the death of Queen Victoria," extensively illustrated.

Clowes' history of the Royal Navy—originally planned as five volumes before expanding to seven—served for many years as the definitive work on the subject. Captain Alfred Mahan, H.W. Wilson, Sir Clements Markham and President Theodore Roosevelt all contributed to this important and still often-cited account. Each volume illustrated with numerous photogravure plates and in-text images. Blind and ink stamps to text and plates; volume I title page with small inked numerals.

A handsome set.
