First edition of the biography of General Willard Barrows, early plainsman and issuer of the first map of Iowa, with frontispiece engraving of the Hunters’ Camp.

“This is a biography of the author’s brother, General Willard Barrows. General Barrows issued the first map of Iowa in 1845, wrote a history of Scott County,” and was generally recognized as one of the first plainsmen. (Storm 196). The book also chronicles “his trip across the plains to California in 1850; expeditions to Idaho and Montana; adventures among the Indians in 1864-5, and his work as a Western surveyor and railroad builder” (Eberstadt 115:106).
