"CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES, I HAVE MADE MY EXPERIMENT, BUT IT MUST BIDE ITS TIME… SO I GO AWAY, AND I TAKE MY SECRET WITH ME": JULES VERNE’S THE MASTER OF THE WORLD, FIRST ENGLISH EDITION
VERNE, Jules. The Master of the World. London: Sampson Low, Marston and Co., [1914]. Octavo, original pictorial green cloth; housed in a custom clamshell box. $4500.
First English edition of one of Verne's' last novels, richly illustrated with 30 engraved plates by Roux.
A sequel to Robur the Conquerer, this is a tale of science run amok, and reflects the aging Verne's increasing pessimism. Originally published in French in 1904, this title was first published in English in a different translation New York in 1911 as part of a set, and without the illustrations. This "more faithful translation by Cranstoun Metcalfe" (Taves & Michaluk V054) is considered superior. Taves & Michaluk V054. Contemporary prize gift inscription, dated 1914.
Only most minor rubbing to pictorial front board. A beautiful copy in nearly fine condition.
