INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH OF SINGER DINAH WASHINGTON

WASHINGTON, Dinah. Photograph inscribed. New York: Universal Attractions, circa 1945. Original glossy gold-tone photograph (8 by 10 inches). $750.

Alluring vintage publicity photograph, taken by celebrity and pin-up photographer James J. Kriegsmann, inscribed, “To Willa Mae [Lane], nice seeing you again. Good luck always, Dinah Washington.”

Washington was discovered in Salle Martin's gospel choir by Louis Armstrong's manager Joe Glaser. She began her jazz career with Lionel Hampton's band in 1943 and dominated the R&B and pop charts in the late 1940s and '50s with such hits as "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes," the popularity of which influenced her stylistic change from jazz singer to balladeer. The recipient of this inscribed photograph, Willa Mae Lane, was a featured dancer at the famous Cotton Club and a close friend of Louis Armstrong.

Corners trimmed, inscription fine.
