INSCRIBED STUDIO PORTRAIT OF CANADIAN POET BLISS CARMAN

CARMAN, Bliss. Inscribed studio portrait. [New Canaan, Connecticut: circa 1910]. Original matte-finish brown-tone photograph (7 by 11 inches). $350.

Original three-quarter length studio portrait of Carman, inscribed, “To Lillian Barber, with regards from Bliss Carman.”

In his time, Bliss Carman was arguably Canada’s best known poet— dubbed by some as the “unofficial poet laureate of Canada.” His greatest early influence was the transcendental work of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Carman produced five books of essays, three dozen books of poetry and countless limited editions. Between 1902 and 1905 alone, he published The Pipes of Pan (five volumes) and edited The World’s Best Poetry (ten volumes). In 1927 he was selected to edit The Oxford Book of American Verse.

Extremely good condition, with a few pock marks and faint horizontal crease, inked inscription not quite taking, but still quite legible.
