John not only painted many remarkable and well-known portraits of literary figures, including Shaw, Yeats, Joyce, Dylan Thomas, and T. E. Lawrence, his flamboyant personality and unorthodox domestic life made him the inspiration for characters in Maugham’s The Moon and Sixpence, Aldous Huxley’s Point Counter Point, Margaret Kennedy’s The Constant Nymph, and D. H. Lawrence’s Aaron’s Rod. The card is imprinted with the address of John’s residence in Hampshire.
A fine signature of this important 20th-century artist.
