"NOTHING THAT I SAY SHALL BE UNTRUE": FIRST EDITION OF TROLLOPE'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY

TROLLOPE, Anthony. An Autobiography. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1883. Two volumes. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter tan calf, raised bands, red and green morocco spine labels, marbled boards and edges. $1100.

First edition of Trollope's autobiographical memoir, with frontispiece portrait of the author and a preface by his son, handsomely bound by Maclehose of Glasgow.

Trollope completed the manuscript for his Autobiography in 1879 and bequeathed it to his son Henry M. Trollope, who then edited and published it in 1883 after his father's death. His Autobiography remains "the principal source of information respecting Trollope's life" (DNB). Sadleir, 316. Bookplate of carpet magnate John Stewart Templeton, with his penciled annotations on page 146 of Volume II describing playing whist with Trollope while sailing from Europe to North America in 1868.

Light foxing to frontispiece, text quite clean; bindings sound and attractive.
