This work was commissioned by Pius VI to celebrate the restoration and re-erection of the magnificent Obelisk in Piazza Montecitorio. Danish archaeologist and numismatist Jorgen Zoëga developed a distinguished reputation in areas including coins and classics prior to coming to the notice of prelate (later cardinal) Stefano Borgia. While in Italy, Zoëga catalogued Borgia’s impressive collection of coins. Though Zoëga returned to Paris shortly after making Borgia’s acquaintance, political events led him to return to Rome, where he stayed for the remainder of his life. Stefano Borgia swiftly became one of Zoëga’s main supporters, recommending him to Pius VI, who began to provide Zoëga with a generous pension. This work was one of several commissions for Rome. As a result of his research, Zoëga became a leader in Egyptian and Coptic studies and became one of the first to provide advice on the accurate interpretation of hieroglyphics. Text in Latin. Folding plates quite lovely with only long, closed tear (tape repair on verso) at map stub of sixth plate, light foxing to interior, binding fine. A very tall, wide-margined, near-fine copy.
