Poster: Back Them Up!

“BACK THEM UP!”: HANDSOME BRITISH WORLD WAR II POSTER

(WORLD WAR II). Poster: Back Them Up! Buy Savings Certificates. London: H.M. Stationery Office, circa 1940. Original three-color broadside poster, measuring 9 by 14 inches, closely framed.

Original World War II poster depicting three soldiers in full uniforms carrying rifles with bayonets climbing up a hill, accompanied by the words: "Back them up! Buy Savings Certificates."

This original 1940s poster depicts three soldiers, presumably during combat training. This poster was part of a massive war bond campaign, in which the British public was encouraged to buy bonds (i.e. savings certificates) in order to finance the war. Investment in the bonds came at considerable risk—had Britain lost the war, the bonds would have been valueless. Indeed, many people lost the paper slips necessary redemption, resulting in billions of dollars of unclaimed bonds. Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, Virginia.

Light rubbing and creasing to edges. Near-fine condition.
