FEATURING THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF J.D. SALINGER IN A BOOK: FIRST EDITION OF THE KITBOOK: FOR SOLDIERS, SAILORS, AND MARINES, A COMPILATION OF STORIES, VERSE, AND CARTOONS FOR WORLD WAR II SERVICEMEN

(SALINGER, J.D.) (WORLD WAR II) BARROWS, R.M., compiler and PASTOR, E.X., associate editor. The Kitbook. For Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines. Favorite Stories, Verse, and Cartoons, for the Entertainment of Servicemen Everywhere. Chicago, Illinois: Consolidated, 1943. 12mo, original pictorial blue and red paper boards, pictorial endpapers.

First edition, second issue of this amusing compilation of stories, verse, and cartoons—many in color—meant to entertain World War II servicemen, featuring "The Hang of It," Salinger's first work to be printed in a book, as well as short works by other famous authors such as Edward Everett Hale, Ellery Queen, O. Henry, and Rudyard Kipling.

Dedicated to "our fighting Yanks all over the world," The Kitbook was released in 1942 to entertain American servicemen abroad. Comprising short works—stories, poems, and cartoons—by various famous authors, it attempted to alleviate boredom and provide comfort through the (reprinted) efforts of famous authors including Vincent Starrett, Margery Sharp, O. Henry, Richard McCann, Rudyard Kipling, Ellery Queen, Edward Everett Hall, Pat Frank, Ernest Lawrence Thayer, J.D. Salinger, Richard Armour, and more. Salinger's "The Hang of It" is perhaps the most notable of these works as it was the first book publication of any Salinger work (the story was published the year before in Collier's). "The Hang of It"—and the other stories in The Kitbook—were "carried into battle by countless soldiers" (Slawenski, 38). "Because of the fragility of this cheap edition, it is rare in good condition" (Starosciak A5). Second issue, with date of 1943 on title page; the first issue is dated 1942. Without rare publisher's shipping box. Owner signature.

Rear inner paper hinge expertly reinforced, light wear to original boards.
