Haunted House and Other Short Stories

"IN THE PRESENT VOLUME I HAVE TRIED TO CARRY OUT HER INTENTION" (LEONARD WOOLF): FIRST EDITION OF VIRGINIA WOOLF'S POSTHUMOUS COLLECTION, HAUNTED HOUSE AND OTHER SHORT STORIES

WOOLF, Virginia. A Haunted House and Other Short Stories. London: Hogarth Press, 1943. Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Woolf's posthumous collection of eighteen short stories, edited and published by Leonard Woolf two years after her death.

Just before her death, Woolf decided to prepare a collection of short stories that would include previously published material that had become unavailable, as well as a selection of new stories, many of which were still in early unrevised forms. In this volume Leonard Woolf attempted to carry out his wife's wishes, including six of the eight stories in 1921's Monday or Tuesday (the only collection of stories Woolf published during her lifetime and long out of print), seven stories which appeared in periodicals between 1922 and 1941, and five previously unpublished stories. Some of Woolf's finest stories are printed here, including the title work, Kew Gardens, Lappin and Lapinova and The Mark on the Wall, her first published short story—"an extraordinary flight where she writes for the first time with real freedom and pleasure" (Susan Dick). Dust jacket designed by Woolf's sister Vanessa Bell. Kirkpatrick A28.

Book fine; faint soiling, toning to spine, minor foxing to verso of extremely good dust jacket.
