PRESENTATION/ASSOCIATION FIRST EDITION OF IN OUR TIME, INSCRIBED BY TOM WOLFE TO FAMED INDEPENDENT FILMMAKER PAUL BARTEL

(BARTEL, Paul) WOLFE, Tom. In Our Time. New York: Farrar Strauss Giroux, (1980). Quarto, original half purple cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Wolfe's satiric view of 1970s America, inscribed by him with his customary bold flourish to the maverick film director and actor, "To Paul Bartel, Tom Wolfe," featuring over 90 illustrations after drawings by Wolfe.

Here Wolfe irreverently chronicles America in the 1970s, which he describes as the nation’s "Elizabethan period, her Bourbon Louis romp.” This presentation copy possesses a distinctive association in Wolfe’s inscription to film director, screenwriter and actor Paul Bartel, who died in 2000. Perhaps best known for Eating Raoul (1982), Bartel shared Wolfe’s satiric view of modern life and was also, in many ways, “a cinematic cousin of H. L. Mencken” (Los Angeles Times). "First printing, 1980" on copyright page. With over 90 illustrations after drawings by Wolfe, many full- or double-page.

Book fine; only tiny bit of edge-wear to about-fine dust jacket.
