Early edition, illustrated with 60 full-page battle scenes, views, portraits and maps, in original cloth.

This ambitious work aims to present "graphic descriptions of heroic deeds achieved by armies and individuals; narratives of personal adventure; thrilling incidents; daring exploits; wonderful escapes; life in camp, field and hospital; adventures at sea; blockade life, etc." and includes "carefully prepared biographies of the leading generals and naval commanders of both the North and the South." This work appeared earlier as the third volume of Wilson's 1878 three-volume work, Battles of America by Sea and Land. First published in this form in Philadelphia by Staley & Hawes in 1881. Interior generally clean, a bit of light edge-wear to title page, cloth with minor shelf-wear, gilt very bright. An extremely good copy.
