"THE MOTOR-CAR HAS RESTORED THE ROMANCE OF TRAVEL"
WHARTON, Edith. A Motor-Flight Through France. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1908. Octavo, original green cloth gilt, top edge gilt, uncut. $800.
First edition of Wharton's wonderful travelogue, with 48 photographic illustrations, a lovely copy.
In Motor-Flight, Wharton describes her trip through France in an automobile with her husband and Henry James. "Wharton was an insatiable traveler; like Alexander the Great, she was always in search of new worlds to conquer" (Lowe, Modern American Women Writers, 3844). As her writing became successful and popular, she experienced social ostracism in her own society, prompting her to move to France in 1907. Following this, she experienced a great burst of creativity, and in this book she expresses her enthusiasm for her adopted country. Without rarely found dust jacket. Garrison A16.I.a. Melish, 32-33.
Interior fine; a few minor bumps or rubs to extremities, cloth clean, gilt bright. A lovely, about-fine copy.
