Born in Captivity. The Story of a Girl's Escape

"I HAD CUT ALL THE TIES THAT HAD BOUND ME; CLOTHES WOULD NOT MATTER NOR POSSESSIONS HAMPER": FIRST EDITION OF PATRICIA WENTWORTH'S BORN IN CAPTIVITY: THE STORY OF A GIRL'S ESCAPE, 1931, IN RARE ORIGINAL DUST JACKET

WENTWORTH, Patricia, pseudonym of TURNBULL, Dora Amy Dillon, under the second pseudonym STARKE, Barbara. Born in Captivity. The Story of a Girl's Escape. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, (1931). Large octavo, original beige cloth, cartographic endpapers, uncut, original dust jacket.

First edition of this quasi-autobiographical novel about a young woman hitchhiking across the country and back in the 1920s, in rare original dust jacket.

Published as a memoir of a young woman hitchhiking from New England to California and back during the turbulent 1920s, this work was actually written by acclaimed author Patricia Wentworth under the pseudonym Barbara Starke. In fact, Wentworth/Starke was the author of 32 crime novels and 34 non-genre books. She was over 50 at the time this book was written. Regardless, the work was advertised as an autobiography: "the story of a woman's experiences during a hitchhike journey across the United States and back, together with an account of the maladjustment and lack of understanding which drove her to this step" (New York Times). Until the identification of the author, scholarly works routinely commented on this work in the same mode, regarding it as a early work by a female traveller and hitchhiker.

Book extremely good, with tiny stain to the first few leaves of text, minor soiling and toning to cloth, and wear to cloth extremities. Rare dust jacket very good, with shallow chipping to extremities, extensive tape reinforcement to verso, and a bit of wear and toning to extremities. A desirable copy.
