Grammatical Institute of the English Language

“AS INFLUENTIAL IN THE STORY OF AMERICAN ENGLISH AS GEORGE WASHINGTON… IN THE NARRATIVE OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION”

WEBSTER, Noah. A Grammatical Institute of the English Language… In Three Parts. Part Second. Containing a Plain and Comprehensive Grammar, Grounded on the True Principles and Idioms of the Language. New York: Printed by Robert Wilson, For Evert Duyckinck, 1798. 12mo, contemporary half calf, original blue paper boards. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

Early edition of Webster’s landmark American Grammar, very scarce in original paper boards.

“Webster was as influential in the story of American English as George Washington was in the narrative of the American Revolution” (McCrum, Cran & MacNeil, 240). As a young schoolteacher, Webster was “disturbed at the few books available for teaching spelling and reading…. [For] Webster was nothing if not a patriot, and… believed that the new nation needed a feeling of identity, a consciousness of self that bound it together and distinguished it from others. Not surprisingly, Webster concluded that this revolution of mind and heart should begin with children and with the acquisition of books that would reflect the American language, culture and history” (ANB). Webster published the first part in his Grammatical Institute, his speller, in 1783, following with part two—his American Grammar (1784)—and part three, his American Reader, in 1785, ultimately publishing his famous American Dictionary in 1828. Printed in New York, this early edition of Webster’s Grammar, part two of his Grammatical Institute, contains “a variety of new remarks and examples.” Preceded by the extremely scarce 1784 first edition. Single page of advertisement at rear. One front free endpaper excised (other present). Evans 34980. See Sabin 102356. Contemporary owner inscription.

Light scattered foxing, tiny bit of inoffensive of wormholing to front flyleaf and several terminal leaves. An extremely good copy in original boards.
