Mr. Loveday's Little Outing

"THE WORLD OF WAUGH'S IMAGINATION IS INTENSELY ALIVE": LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF EVELYN WAUGH'S FIRST BOOK OF STORIES, MR. LOVEDAY'S LITTLE OUTING, 1936, ONE OF 750 COPIES

WAUGH, Evelyn. Mr. Loveday's Little Outing And Other Sad Stories. Boston: Little, Brown, 1936. Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket.

Limited first edition of Waugh's first book of short stories, one of 750 copies, preceded by the same year's English trade edition, his uniquely comic collection of eleven stories including "By Special Request," which contains additional passages in its alternative ending to Handful of Dust (1937), a splendid copy in the original dust jacket.

Evelyn Waugh's darkly humorous collection of eleven stories belongs "to a special kind of comedy, which he has invented… the world of Waugh's imagination is intensely alive" (Spectator). This limited first edition of only 750 copies, which contains eleven stories, features the title story and "'Incident in Azania,' which sheds an intriguing light on English expatriate life… Biographically the most significant is 'Winner Takes All,' the story of two brothers… though its tone is light, the story conveys much of Evelyn's resentment against Alec" (Hastings, 350). Notably, the story "By Special Request," which offers an alternative to the final section of Handful of Dust (1934), contains "additional passages published for the first time" in this limited edition and the same year's earlier English trade edition (Davis, Evelyn Waugh Collection A12). Copyright page with "Published October, 1936" above "This Edition is limited to 750 copies of which 700 are for sale." Dust jacket design by Thomas Derrick.

Interior fine, faint soiling to cloth; bright pristine dust jacket. An exceptional about-fine copy.
