“MEMORY, THAT WINGED HOST”: FIRST EDITION OF WAUGH’S BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, SIGNED AND DATED BY WAUGH

WAUGH, Evelyn. Brideshead Revisited. The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder. London: Chapman & Hall, 1945. Octavo, original rose cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom half leather clamshell box.

First edition of Waugh’s most famous novel—his “finest achievement”—in scarce dust jacket, signed and dated by Waugh on the front free endpaper one year after publication, "Evelyn Waugh May 1946."

"'My theme,' says the narrator in Evelyn Waugh's latest, his most carefully written and deeply felt novel, 'is memory, that winged host.' And, with that, the brightly devastating satirist of England's 20s and 30s moves from one world to another and a larger one… to a world in which people credibly think and feel… For Mr. Waugh is very definitely an artist, with something like a genius for precision and clarity not surpassed by any novelist writing in English in his time… Brideshead Revisited is Mr. Waugh's finest achievement" (New York Times Book Review). Preceded by a printing of 50 proof copies printed prior to publication for private distribution by the author. "Brideshead was published by Chapman & Hall in London on 28 May 1945… it was an immediate and overwhelming success" (Hastings, 494). Infrequent faint pencil underlining and marginal notations.

Book with mild toning to spine, scarce dust jacket with some darkening to spine, shallow chipping to spine ends, short closed tear to fold of rear flap. A near-fine copy, very rare inscribed.
