SIGNED BY GEORGE WASHINGTON AS PRESIDENT, 1794: LETTERS PATENT, FOR A YALE GRADUATE AND PARTICIPANT IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR

WASHINGTON, George. Document [Letters Patent] signed. Philadelphia, PA: February 14, 1794. Folio (10-1/2 by 14-3/4 inches), single sheet of vellum, printed on recto and engrossed by hand, paper seal present.

Very rare George Washington Letters Patent, boldly signed by him as President, for a Yale graduate and participant in the American Revolutionary War. A beautifully preserved, large signed document with fragile paper seal intact.

Washington-signed Letters Patent are extremely rare with few surviving examples. This patent is for "James Davenport," a citizen of the State of New Jersey, who has invented a new and useful improvement "In the Mode of Weaving and beating Sail Duck and other Cloth which improvements had not been known or used before his application." James Davenport was an American lawyer, judge and politician, serving as a U.S. Representative from Connecticut. He graduated from Yale College in 1777, and served in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. Later in his career he was a judge of the Fairfield County Court.

During Washington's presidency the United States only issued 163 patents. As both the Patent Act of 1790 and the revised act of 1793 required the president's signature on the documents, this figure also represents the original number that bore Washington's signature. Despite that figure, Washington-signed patents are extremely rare, with only a few surviving, mostly in institutions. Countersigned by William Bradford, Attorney General. This item was bound into an extra-illustrated copy of the "History of the City of New York" circa 1872, in the possession of Emery E. Childs, and while the book—expanded to 21 volumes—has passed through several hands, this particular autograph letter has not been on the market since it was bound in, a happy circumstance that has also maintained this rare letter in excellent condition.

Expected folds, one fold reinforced on verso with cloth, a bit of toning to vellum, rare seal present, affixed, and in excellent condition. A lovely, rare and desirable document signed by Washington as president.
