Moeurs, Usages et Costumes

ASIA, EUROPE, AFRICA, THE AMERICAS: WITH NEARLY 200 BEAUTIFULLY AND VIVIDLY HAND-COLORED PLATES OF COSTUME AND CULTURE FROM AROUND THE WORLD

WAHLEN, Auguste [pseudonym for LOUMYER, Jean Françios Nicolas]. Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de Tous les Peuples du Monde. Bruxelles: Librairie Historique-Artistique, 1843-44. Four volumes. Royal octavo, late 19th-century three-quarter straight-grain red morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt.

First edition of this scarce and beautiful work on the costumes of the world, finely illustrated with a wonderful series of 183 vibrantly hand-colored plates, most heightened with gum arabic, as well as vignette title pages. Handsomely bound in morocco-gilt by Bayntun.

Loumyer completed his comprehensive survey of world culture and costume with the collaboration of J. J. Van Beveren; the plates were engraved by Doms, Duverger, Lisbet, Markaert, Mercier and others. Seventy-nine plates are in the Asia volume, 32 in Oceania, 34 in Europe, and 38 in Africa and the Americas. With 183 plates of 186 called for in the plate list. Volume I contains 79 of 79 plates called for in the plate list; Volume II 32 of 34; Volume III 34 of 34, and Volume IV 38 of 39 (41 called for, but the erratum in Volume III explains that two of these were never issued). Text in French. Hiler & Hiler, 553. Colas 3041. Lipperheide 61. Vinet 2124.

Occasional light foxing to text only, chiefly marginal. Plates fine, hand-coloring vivid. Light expert restoration to spines. A beautifully bound set of this beautifully illustrated survey of world culture.
