INSCRIBED BY QUEEN VICTORIA TO HER CHAPLAIN, THE REVEREND MALCOLM TAYLOR, IN BEAUTIFUL CLOTH-GILT BINDING
VICTORIA. More Leaves from the Journal of A Life in the Highlands. London: Smith, Elder, 1884. Octavo, original gilt-stamped green cloth, patterned endpapers.
First edition, presentation copy, with 13 engravings, inscribed by Queen Victoria to one of her Chaplains-in-Ordinary: "To Dr M. Taylor D.D.div. In remembrance of Balmoral from Victoria R. Feb: 18-1884."
Sequel to Leaves from the Journal of Our Life in the Highlands, this volume begins after the death of Prince Albert. Members of the Royal Household objected to the publication of these journals, yet the journals' less-than-regal tone greatly endeared the widowed queen to her subjects. This book was inscribed by Victoria to the Reverend Malcolm Taylor, Chaplain to the Queen. Taylor was Professor of Church History at the University of Edinburgh and a member of the Queen's Ecclesiastical Household. Queen Victoria appointed him to be one of her honorary chaplains responsible for a yearly sermon in the Chapel Royal. While Taylor was never promoted to one of Victoria's 36 Chaplains-in-Ordinary, he nevertheless was expected to be available at all times for Victoria's spiritual needs and local newspapers record his comings and goings at her summer engagements in the North. Tiny binder ticket.
A few spots of foxing to interior, binding lovely and fine, gilt bright.
