"LET US DEVELOP RESPECT FOR ALL LIVING THINGS": PRESENTATION FIRST EDITION OF 50 YEARS AT GOMBE, INSCRIBED BY JANE GOODALL

GOODALL, Jane. 50 Years at Gombe. A Tribute to Five Decades of Wildlife Research, Education, and Conservation. New York: Stewart, Tabori & Chang, (2010). Large square quarto (9 by 10-1/4 inches), original laminated black paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition of a richly illustrated account of Goodall's pioneering work as a scientist and award-winning voice for conservation, published on the 50-year anniversary of her discovery of a chimpanzee making and using a tool—"one of the great achievements of 20th-century scholarship" (Stephen Jay Gould)—a memorable presentation copy warmly inscribed on the title page by her, "For J—, D— and S— With a million thanks for all you have done & do to help. And especially for your friendship. With love, Jane."

Published five decades after Goodall first arrived at the Gombe Stream Reserve at the age of 26, 50 Years at Gombe begins with an account of that first year, when she "made one of the most important scientific observations of modern times… she witnessed a creature, other than a human, in the act not just using a tool but of making one." To Stephen Jay Gould, her discovery stands as "one of the great achievements of 20th-century scholarship" (Guardian). In this beautifully crafted book, with over 100 illustrations, most in color and many full page, Goodall and members of the Jane Goodall Institute chronicle those important decades, as Goodall became a global voice for conservation, determined to protect chimpanzees and "raise awareness around the world about their plight." First edition, first printing: issued same year as an Easton Press signed edition, no priority established. With foreword by Mary Smith.

A beautiful inscribed copy in fine condition.
