"WE'VE DUG SO FAST AND WE'VE DUG SO WELL THAT WE'VE QUITE FORGOTTEN TO LEAVE A WAY OUT!"

BURTON, Virginia Lee. Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1939. Oblong quarto, original pictorial tan cloth, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket.

Very scarce first edition of the beloved children's classic, in scarce second-issue dust jacket.

"Taking her cue from her small sons, Aristides and Michael, Burton chose subjects that would intrigue children… [including] Mary Ann, the steam shovel… [Burton's books] have heroes and heroines children can understand and enjoy, ingenious and satisfactory endings and lively illustrations. The books survive because they exhibit so effectively the elements most basic to children's literature" (Silvey, 109-10). First edition, with title page dated 1939. Probable second-issue dust jacket, with $2 price on front flap; the first issue was priced at $1.50. Faint smiley face stamps to endpapers. Owner initials. Owner signatures effaced.

Book with expert paper repair to half title, scattered soiling and a few stray marks to interior, occasional small closed tears to edges of pages, and light soiling to generally clean cloth. Bright dust jacket with slight soiling and some wear mainly to extremities. A very good copy of a very scarce work.
