Slovenly Peter

LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF TWAIN’S SLOVENLY PETER IN ORIGINAL GLASSINE, CHEMISE AND SLIPCASE

TWAIN, Mark. Slovenly Peter. New York: Limited Editions Club, 1935. Thin octavo, original half red morocco and illustrated cloth-covered boards, original glassine, illustrated chemise, slipcase.

Limited first edition of Twain’s delightful translation of the German original, number 607 of 1500 copies, richly illustrated with numerous hand-colored drawings by Fritz Kredel, fine in original glassine, chemise and slipcase.

In 1891, while his family was living in Berlin, Twain wrote an original translation of Heinrich Hoffmann’s Struwwelpeter (1845) as a Christmas surprise for his three children. Clara Clemens selected the previously unpublished manuscript for publication to celebrate the centennial of her father’s birth. Of the translation, “the first couplet of each story is, as a rule, a real translation of the original, [while] the remainder of the story diverges from the German and is characterized by padding…, approximation and more or less free invention justified, if at all, only by suggestions offered by the accompanying illustrations” (Krumpelmann, Mark Twain and the German Language, 20). With numerous watercolors by Fritz Kredel adapted from Hoffman’s originals, hand-colored in the Fred Fulton studio. LEC 68. BAL 3555.

Book fine with interior clean and colors bright. Original glassine dust jacket with mild toning to spine, minor loss to spine ends, vertical crease near fold of front panel and flap. Light toning to spines of original chemise and slipcase, slipcase lightly rubbed. Overall an exceptional copy in about-fine condition.
