“I PROPOSE TO CONSIDER THE QUESTION, ‘CAN MACHINES THINK?’”: FIRST EDITION OF TURING’S “COMPUTING MACHINERY AND INTELLIGENCE,” LANDMARK WORK ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

TURING, A.M. "Computing Machinery and Intelligence." IN: Mind, Volume 59, Number 236, pp. 433-460. Edinburgh: Thomas Nelson & Sons, October 1950. Octavo, original printed gray paper wrappers. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition of this controversial breakthrough theory of artificial intelligence by Turing, widely held as the father of modern computer science, containing “his famous description of the ‘Turing test’” (Origins of Cyberspace), an exceptional copy in rarely found original wrappers.

This pioneering paper by A.M. Turing, widely considered the father of modern computer science, includes "his famous description of the 'Turing test' for the establishment of a machine's intelligence" (Origins of Cyberspace 936). From 1948 onward, Turing's work at the University of Manchester "was among the earliest investigations of the use of electronic computers for artificial-intelligence search. He was among the first to believe that electronic machines were capable of doing not only numerical computations, but also general-purposed information processing… He attempted to break down the distinctions between human and machine intelligence and to provide a single standard of intelligence… Like Shannon and Wiener, Turing was moving toward a unified theory of information and information processing applicable to both the machine and the biological worlds" (Aspray, Annals of the History of Computing VII:132). Time Magazine named Turing one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. His "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" notably took up the question of a machine's ability to think just as mechanical computing devices were undertaking more and more complex tasks, and it remains central to this ongoing debate.
