INSCRIBED TO GENERAL WILLIAM T. SHERMAN: FIRST EDITION OF MAJOR HENRY WARD CAMP’S BIOGRAPHY

TRUMBULL, H. Clay. The Knightly Soldier: A Biography of Major Henry Ward Camp. Boston: Nichols and Noyes, 1865. Octavo, original gilt-stamped green cloth.

First edition of this warm biography of Major Henry Ward Camp, inscribed to “W. T. Sherman, General, 1871—from the Author.”

"Trumbull was an effective speaker and a stimulating and resourceful writer. He was, in the best sense of the term, a nineteenth-century Puritan" (DAB). Here Trumbull, who was ordained as a chaplain so that he might minister to the wounded in the Civil War, gives an account of his fallen friend, Major Henry Ward, which celebrates and mourns Ward's life, and "simply shows him as he was" (Preface). With frontispiece portrait of Ward and several engraved plates.

Light foxing to frontispiece, inner paper hinges expertly reinforced, light soiling to cloth, and minor wear to extremities. An extremely good copy.
