My Life

"UNTIL WE ARE DONE WITH THE IRONIES OF HISTORY… THE IMAGE OF TROTSKY WILL NOT DISSIPATE" (CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS): FIRST EDITION OF LEON TROTSKY'S MY LIFE, 1930, IN ORIGINAL DUST JACKET

(RUSSIAN REVOLUTION) TROTSKY, Leon. My Life. An Attempt at an Autobiography. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1930. Octavo, original gilt-stamped red cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Trotsky's autobiography—one of "his greatest literary works"—published ten years before his murder, with frontispiece portrait, in the very elusive dust jacket.

"To have had a part in two revolutions, wrote Thomas Paine, was to have lived to some purpose. Trotsky took a leading part in the Russian revolutions of 1905 and 1917, and also in many other political and military upheavals, from the Balkans to China, and was perhaps the most prescient writer of his day in warning of the true menace of National Socialism. Yet his most enduring and tenacious battle was against the monstrous regime that had resulted from his earlier exertions… Until we are done with the ironies of history (because they will never be done with us), the image of Trotsky will not dissipate" (Hitchens, "The Old Man," in Atlantic). "At the time of Lenin's death in 1924, Trotsky was widely credited with managing the October 1917 coup and winning the civil war, was the best known of Lenin's associates, and hence he was presumed to be the deceased leader's heir. Insiders, however, knew that he stood no chance against Stalin… on August 20, 1940, a Spanish Communist named Ramon Mercader smashed a mountain-climber's ax into Trotsky's skull in Coyoacan, a suburb of Mexico City. He died the next day" (New York Times). "A brilliant writer, a born leader, Trotsky is larger than life" (Nation). Written in exile, My Life is one of "his greatest literary works" (LeBlanc, Trotsky). First edition, first printing: with "A" on copyright page; no statement of edition or printings.
