“HOTTER THAN BOND, COOLER THAN BULLIT”: FIRST EDITION OF SHAFT
TIDYMAN, Ernest. Shaft. New York: Macmillan, (1970). Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket.
First edition of Ernest Tityman’s groundbreaking novel, an exceptional copy in scarce dust jacket.
Academy Award-winning writer Tidyman, who also wrote The French Connection and other acclaimed films, won an NAACP Image Award for his Shaft novels. Tidyman wrote the screenplay for director Gordon Parks’ 1971 film starring Richard Roundtree, which was advertised as “Hotter than Bond, Cooler than Bullitt” and won an Oscar for Isaac Hayes. Tidyman’s novel also inspired John Singleton’s Shaft (2000), starring Samuel L. Jackson. With “First Printing” on copyright page. With tiny red dot (remainder mark) at top edge, as often. Hubin, 404. Reilly, 1384.
A fine copy.
