Many Moons

“‘NEVER MIND THE BLUE POODLES,’ SAID THE KING. ‘WHAT I WANT NOW IS THE MOON”: FIRST EDITION OF THURBER’S “BEST BOOK FOR CHILDREN”

THURBER, James. Many Moons. New York: Harcourt, Brace, (1943). Quarto, original red cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition, winner of the Caldecott Medal for 1944, with colorful illustrations by Louis Slobodkin.

A light-hearted fable, this was the first of five children’s books written by celebrated humorist James Thurber. “Filled with word-play, allusions, rhymes, alliteration, snatches of song and poetry, wild flights of fancy that veer into the absurd, and—in the greatest departure from his work for adults—happy endings… Many Moons is considered his best book for children, and it shows a tenderness and charm that his writing for adults does not.” With bright, colorful drawings by Slobodkin, whose “illustrations emphasize the theatrical, light-opera quality of the tale” (Silvey 643). Connolly, 284. Two owner signatures.

Book about-fine, price-clipped dust jacket very good with a few closed tears, modest toning to spine.
