"THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO GET YOUR ARM DYED BLUE ON A 747 FLYING AT 38,000 FEET OVER THE PACIFIC": THE CURSE OF LONO, DELUXE FOLIO EDITION BOLDLY SIGNED BY BOTH HUNTER S. THOMPSON AND RALPH STEADMAN
THOMPSON, Hunter S. The Curse of Lono. Köln: Taschen, [2005]. Folio (14 by 20 inches), original white cloth, original slipcase, original shipping carton.
Signed limited deluxe edition, number 604 of 1000 copies signed by Thompson and illustrator Ralph Steadman.
Asked by Running magazine to cover the 1980 Honolulu Marathon, Thompson went to Hawaii to cover the event in his trademark "gonzo" fashion, bringing along his long-time illustrator Ralph Steadman. The article grew into a full-blown book about Thompson's lengthy, drug-laden vacation in Hawaii, his fishing trips, his equally drug-addled and somewhat shady associates, and includes his research into the myths surrounding the Hawaiian god Lono, whom the Hawaiians took Captain James Cook as the reincarnation of when he landed in Kealakekua Bay in 1779. Lavishishly illustrated by Thompson's preferred artist, mostly in color. First published in 1983 in a paperback edition, the book was not a success and quickly went out of print. Issued simultaneously by Taschen in a signed limited edition of 200 artist's proof copies.
