(INDIA) THOMAS, George Powell. Views of Simla. London: Dickinson, (1846). Tall folio (15 by 22 inches), period style three-quarter crimson morocco with original cloth-gilt title label affixed to front cover, plates laid in loose.

This series of views made in and around the town of Simla (modern-day Shimla), the summer capital of the British Raj, was a private commission from the publisher Dickinson & Co. The artist, Captain George Powell Thomas, was in the 64th Regiment Bengal Infantry. With accompanying 11-page text, “A Brief Alphabetical Account of the Inhabitants, Customs and Productions of the Himalayas,” and two-page Description of the Plates. A very few copies were also issued with the plates hand-colored.

Plates with light edge-wear, not affecting images; title page with light creasing. An extremely good copy of this scarce work.
