"A LYRIC POET OF THE FIRST ORDER": FIRST EDITION OF DYLAN THOMAS' SELECTED WRITINGS

THOMAS, Dylan. Selected Writings. New York: New Directions, (1946). Octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of an important collection of prose and poetry by Dylan Thomas, published six years before his tragic death, with over 90 poems, four stories and selections from Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog.

Dylan Thomas "was (and is) a lyric poet of the first order… the best exposition of what a number of his poems mean is contained within passages of his own prose, particularly in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog and in an early story, 'The Burning Baby'" (New York Times, emphasis in original). This major collection features over 90 poems, including "Fern Hill, "The force that through the green fuse drives the flower" and "In My Craft or Sullen Art," along with four stories including "The Burning Baby," and selected chapters from Portrait of the Artists as a Young Dog. First edition, likely first issue: green cloth binding and double-page title page, publisher's address of "500 Fifth Avenue" on copyright page (New Directions moved from 500 Fifth Avenue to 333 Sixth Avenue after 1946); dust jacket with "Lowry" on right front panel, bottom of rear panel with address of "500 Fifth Avenue." While bibliographic consensus remains unsettled, likely second issue copies are found in rose cloth, with single-page title page and later publisher's address of "333 Sixth Avenue" on copyright page and dust jacket. Maud, 12. See Rolfe B.11.

Text fresh, light toning to spine; closed tears, chipping to spine head of colorful very good dust jacket.
