Casey at the Bat IN: A Treasury of Humorous Poetry

“BUT THERE IS NO JOY IN MUDVILLE—MIGHTY CASEY HAS STRUCK OUT”

THAYER, Ernest. "Casey at the Bat." IN: A Treasury of Humorous Poetry, pp. 297-99. Boston: Dana Estes, (1902). Octavo, original gilt-stamped pictorial green cloth, top edge gilt, uncut.

First edition, first state of this anthology of humorous poetry, containing the first book publication of “Casey at the Bat,” with numerous full-page illustrations.

This classic American poem first appeared in an 1888 issue of the San Francisco Examiner, and was popularized by the performances of actor DeWolfe Hopper. In 1901, it was published separately as a pamphlet. It was first published between the boards of a book in 1902 for this collection of witty poetry. First state, with "Casey at the Bat" wrongly attributed to Joseph Quinlan Murphy.

A beautiful copy in fine condition.
