"OUR ECHOES ROLL FROM SOUL TO SOUL, AND GROW FOR EVER AND FOR EVER"

TENNYSON, Alfred. The Poetic and Dramatic Works. Boston and New York: Macmillan, (1898). Octavo, early full brown tree calf rebacked with original elaborately gilt-decorated spine laid down, black morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a custom slipcase.

Handsomely bound collected edition of Tennyson's works, with a leaf tipped in with an autograph verse by Tennyson from "The Princess" signed and dated by him in 1854.

Tennyson "was one of the finest lyrists of the English tongue… Half at least of what he wrote the world would not willingly let die" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 612-13). The six-line autograph verse by Tennyson, signed by him and dated "June 20th/54," is the last stanza from the third section of The Princess, first published in 1847: " O love, they die in yon rich sky, / They faint on hill or field or river: / Our echoes roll from soul to soul, / And grow for ever and for ever. / Blow, bugle, blow, set the wild echoes flying, / And answer, echoes, answer, dying, dying, dying." Title pages printed in red and black.

Text about fine, joints expertly repaired. Binding attractive.
