Idylls of the King

“HIS IMAGINATION AND FANTASY WERE AT EASE IN THIS DREAM WORLD”: TENNYSON’S IDYLLS OF THE KING WITH 31 PLATES BY DORÉ

(DORE, Gustave) TENNYSON, Alfred. Idylls of the King. New York and London: G.P. Putnam’s Sons/The Knickerbocker Press, circa 1900. Two volumes. 12mo, original gilt-stamped pictorial blue cloth, top edges gilt, uncut.

Later edition of Tennyson’s Arthurian masterpiece, with 31 illustrations in photogravure by Gustave Doré.

“By the early 19th century, the Arthurian legends had become a literary anachronism. Tennyson’s poetry brought about a rebirth of interest in the material and eventually placed it on a new plateau of respect and significance for writers and artists” (Lacy, 446). In 1859, the publication of the first four of the eventual dozen Idylls (the first complete publication of all 12 poems together did not occur until 1891) “received a welcome so instantaneous as at once to restore [their] author to his lost place in the affections of many” (DNB). This edition reprints the 1868 Moxon folio edition, illustrated by Doré: “His imagination and fantasy were at ease in this dream world…. Doré brought to lfie again these phantoms, these riverbanks, these mysterious woods, these epic processions, these mysterious moonlit nights” (Jules Claretie). With frontispiece in each volume and 29 photogravure plates. Malan, 303. Contemporary pencil gift inscriptions.

Interiors generally quite clean, cloth fresh with only slightest rubbing to spine ends, gilt bright. A beautiful copy in fine condition.
