“A LEGENDARY FIGURE IN 20TH-CENTURY AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHY”: SIGNED LIMITED EDITION OF PAUL STRAND’S MEXICAN PORTFOLIO

STRAND, Paul. The Mexican Portfolio. (New York): Da Capo, (1967). Folio (12 by 16 inches), 20 original plates loose as issued, original booklet; original wrapper, chemise and slipcase.

Signed limited second edition, number 176 of 1000 copies signed by Strand, whose impact on photography was heralded by Stieglitz as “a truly photographic version of… painters like Picasso and Matisse,” with 20 flawless hand-pulled exhibition-size photogravures, rarely found complete.

“A legendary figure in 20th-century American photography, Paul Strand was a practitioner of pure fine-art photography” (Photography Encyclopedia, 479). Strand’s Mexican Portfolio is one of an elegant “series of studies of people and places” that exemplifies his self-expressed desire “to photograph people who have strength and dignity in their faces” (Parr & Badger I:217). Alfred Stieglitz, who first recognized the power of Strand’s images, noted that it was Strand, alone, who practiced “a truly photographic version of the kind of forceful representation he found in painters like Picasso and Matisse” (Roth, 42). The 20 velvety exhibition-size photogravures in this signed limited edition brilliantly reconceive Strand’s earlier Photographs of Mexico and its images taken in Mexico in 1932. Using the same steel-faced plates as that edition, this Mexican Portfolio was preferred by Strand—“He has made these plates sing,” Strand said of master printer Albert DeLong’s hand-pulled photogravures. Further, unlike the earlier edition’s application of a heavy Damar varnish that is prone to darkening, the varnish chosen for use herein has not yellowed. Photographs of Mexico published in 1940 in an edition of 250. See Open Book, 158; Roth, 136, Parr & Badger I:207.

A seminal work in fine condition.
